Prague Travel Tips
Here are some travel tips to help you have a wonderful time exploring Prague, the City of a Hundred Spires:
Planning:
- Consider the time of year: Prague is beautiful year-round, but the shoulder seasons (spring – March to May and autumn – September to November) offer the most pleasant weather with moderate crowds. Summers (June to August) can be hot and crowded, while winters (December to February) can be cold and snowy.
- Book flights and accommodations in advance: Especially during peak season, popular flights and hotels can fill up quickly. Consider purchasing a Prague Visitor Pass, which gives you free entry to over 60 attractions, including Prague Castle and the Old Town Hall Astronomical Clock, and free public transportation.
- Learn a few basic Czech phrases: While English is spoken in tourist areas, a little effort with the local language goes a long way. Here are a few helpful phrases:
- Dobrý den (Hello/Good day)
- Na shledanou (Goodbye)
- Prosím (Please)
- Děkuji (Thank you)
- Nemluvim česky (I don’t speak Czech)
- Kolik to stojí? (How much does it cost?)
- Dovolíte mi projít, prosím? (May I pass by, please?)
Getting Around:
- The metro is a great way to get around the city: It’s efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. Purchase a ticket or a Prague Card for unlimited travel on metros, trams, and buses.
- Walking is the best way to experience the charm of the city center: Many historic sites are concentrated within the Old Town and New Town, making walking a delightful way to explore.
- Trams are another option for getting around: They are affordable and can be a fun way to see the city.
- Taxis can be expensive: If you do need to take a taxi, be sure to hail one from a taxi rank or call for one from your hotel. Agree on the fare in advance to avoid misunderstandings.
- E-Bike and E-Scooter: You can join local e-Bike and e-scooter tours to explore Prague.
Etiquette:
- Validate your metro tickets: Always validate your metro ticket before entering the platform area. There are yellow machines at the entrance of each station.
- Smoking is banned indoors in most places: This includes restaurants, bars, and public transportation. Designated smoking areas are usually outdoors.
- Tipping is not mandatory, but appreciated: A small gratuity (round up your bill or leave 10%) is a nice gesture for good service, but not expected.
Other Prague Travel Tips:
- Pack comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking on cobblestone streets, so comfortable shoes are essential.
- Bring a refillable water bottle: The tap water in Prague is safe to drink, so there’s no need to waste money on bottled water.
- Beware of pickpockets: Petty theft can be an issue in crowded tourist areas, so keep your belongings close and be aware of your surroundings.
- The currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK): Cash is still widely accepted, but many places also accept credit cards.
- Enjoy the local beer: Czech Republic is famous for its delicious beer, so be sure to try a Pilsner or a dark lager at a local pub.
