Toronto Travel Tips
Here are some travel tips to help you make the most of your visit to Toronto, Canada’s largest city:
Planning:
- Consider the time of year: Toronto experiences all four seasons. Summer (June-August) is warm and humid with occasional rain showers. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather with beautiful fall foliage in autumn. Winters (December-March) can be cold and snowy, but also magical with festive decorations and winter sports opportunities.
- Book accommodations and flights in advance: Especially during peak season (summer), popular hotels and flights can fill up quickly. Consider purchasing a Toronto CityPASS, which gives you free entry to popular attractions like the CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, and Casa Loma, and discounts on other attractions and tours.
- Learn some basic Canadian phrases: While English is the official language, a few Canadian colloquialisms will go a long way:
- “Eh?” (a question seeking agreement or confirmation)
- “Sorry” (used more frequently than in the US, often to express politeness)
- “Loonie” (one-dollar coin)
- “Twoonie” (two-dollar coin)
- “Double-double” (coffee with two cream and two sugars)
Getting Around:
- The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) is the most efficient way to get around: It consists of subways, streetcars, and buses. Purchase a PRESTO card for pay-as-you-go travel or a day pass for unlimited travel within a specific timeframe.
- Walking is a great way to see the city center: Many major attractions are within walking distance of each other, and you’ll stumble upon hidden gems along the way.
- Taxis are readily available: They can be a convenient option, but fares can be expensive compared to the TTC. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are also popular.
Etiquette:
- Hold the door open for people: Canadians are known for their politeness, so courtesy goes a long way.
- Tip servers at restaurants: The standard tipping rate is 15-20% of the bill.
Other Toronto Travel Tips:
- Pack comfortable shoes: You’ll likely do a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are essential.
- Bring a reusable water bottle: The tap water in Toronto is safe to drink.
- The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD): Many places accept credit cards, but it’s good to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases.
- Embrace the multicultural scene: Toronto is a very diverse city, so be sure to explore different neighborhoods and try cuisines from around the world. Little Italy, Koreatown, and Greektown are all great places to start.
- Catch a hockey game: Ice hockey is Canada’s national sport, so attending a Toronto Maple Leafs game is a quintessential Canadian experience!
